Could Your Lymphatic System Be Contributing to How You’re Feeling?

Could Your Lymphatic System Be Contributing to How You’re Feeling?

Many women reach their mid-forties and beyond saying the same things.

“I wake up feeling puffy.”

“My ankles swell by the evening.”

“My wedding ring suddenly feels tight.”

“My body feels heavy, sluggish and uncomfortable.”

“I’ve started exercising more but still feel bloated.”

These changes are incredibly common during perimenopause and menopause, yet very few women understand one body system that may be contributing to these symptoms ~ the lymphatic system.

Understanding how your lymphatic system works can help explain why your body may be feeling different…and give you a very dreamy way to boost yourself!

What Is The Lymphatic System?

Think of your blood vessels as delivering supplies to every cell.

The lymphatic system is responsible for collecting excess fluid, proteins, immune cells and cellular waste that remain in the tissues before returning them safely back into the circulation.

Unlike your cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no central pump.

Instead, lymph movement depends upon:

  • skeletal muscle contractions
  • diaphragmatic breathing
  • movement of nearby arteries
  • healthy lymph vessel contractions
  • one-way valves within lymphatic vessels

This means prolonged sitting, stress, illness, surgery and reduced physical activity can all influence how efficiently lymph moves around the body.

Why Does This Matter During Perimenopause?

During perimenopause, fluctuating and eventually declining oestrogen levels affect far more than reproductive health.

Research suggests hormonal changes can influence:

  • fluid regulation
  • blood vessel function
  • connective tissue quality
  • muscle mass
  • recovery
  • sleep quality

At the same time many women naturally become less active due to joint pain, caring responsibilities or fatigue.

The result?

Many women notice:

  • swollen fingers
  • facial puffiness
  • fluid around the ankles
  • abdominal bloating
  • feelings of heaviness
  • aching legs after standing
  • reduced energy

Not because the lymphatic system has “stopped working”, but because several factors affecting normal fluid regulation have changed simultaneously.

Can Lymphatic Drainage Help Inflammation?

This is probably the question I’m asked most.

The honest answer is:

It depends what you mean by inflammation.

If you’re referring to chronic inflammatory diseases, lymphatic drainage is not a fix-all.

However, if excess tissue fluid is contributing to feelings of swelling, tightness or discomfort, encouraging normal lymphatic flow may improve comfort by helping excess interstitial fluid return to the circulation.

Many clients describe feeling:

  • lighter
  • less puffy
  • more mobile
  • increase in energy
  • less tight through the abdomen
  • more comfortable in their clothes

These changes are primarily related to improved fluid movement rather than reducing body fat.

Does Lymphatic Drainage Detox The Body?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions online.

Your body does have highly specialised detoxification organs.

Lymphatic drainage does not just “flush toxins out.”

Instead, it supports the normal movement of lymphatic fluid back into the bloodstream, where the liver and kidneys continue the job they perform remarkably well.

The lymph nodes also play an essential role by filtering lymph and providing a meeting place for immune cells to recognise bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells.

In other words, lymphatic drainage supports + boosts one part of a sophisticated physiological system rather than replacing it.

What About Pain?

Pain is rarely caused by one thing alone.

If swelling and tissue congestion are contributing to discomfort, reducing excess fluid may help some people feel more comfortable and move more freely.

Equally important is the deeply relaxing nature of lymphatic drainage.

Gentle, repetitive touch has been shown to influence the autonomic nervous system, encouraging a shift towards parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) activity.

For many peri- and post-menopausal women living with high stress levels, poor sleep and persistent muscle tension, this reduction in nervous system arousal is just as valuable as the physical effects of treatment itself.

What Does The Research Tell Us?

Evidence supporting Manual Lymphatic Drainage is strongest for:

  • lymphoedema management
  • reducing post-surgical swelling
  • improving recovery after certain cosmetic procedures
  • reducing oedema following injury

Emerging research is investigating wider applications, like generalised bloating, chronic pain and support for the hormonal flow.

I certainly have more energy and feel lighter after treatment, significantly enough to know I wanted to invest in qualifying in this modality to share this with you!

My Clinical Approach

Every treatment begins with understanding why you’re experiencing your symptoms.

We can assess if lymphatic drainage is the most appropriate choice 🙂

My aim isn’t simply to reduce puffiness for a day….

It’s to understand the contributing factors and help you build long-term resilience through massage, movement, strength and education.

Supporting Your Lymphatic System Every Day

Massage is only one piece of the puzzle.

The whole answer may surprise you….

In my next blog, I’ll explain why I combine lymphatic drainage with Pilates, and why the most powerful way to support your lymphatic system isn’t simply lying on the treatment couch ~ it’s learning how to use your breathing, posture and movement to keep lymph flowing long after your massage has finished.
