Most Mums might think their core can’t change after having a baby (no matter how many Years old your child is now)
“Urgh, my tummy has never been the same since my babies…I think having back pain and a pooch is just something I’ll have to put up with”
Listen. Today’s email is juuuussttt for you, dear.
Your body has performed nothing short of magic. This blog is about honoring your body, and also having strategies to feel strong and functional to do whatever it is your mum-life throws at you.
Having a strong core will help you go far!
“But Jana, can my tummy look any different after ‘x’ pregnancies?”
^^^ I’ve totally thought that too after Joshua, so I want to share some strategies that you may not know that will help you to love the body you are in, whilst also making sure your core FUNCTIONS well. Having a flatter tummy, usually becomes part of the happy by-product of resolving any underlying issues.
This is my TOP checklist for core concerns that may be holding you back:

If you ticked YES to any of the above, they can contribute to less than optimal core function. These need to resolved so that you can do your core exercises WELL and get the RESULTS from time spent doing them!
Pro-tip #1
Get your diastasis checked
If you suspect an abdominal gap, make sure you seek support from a qualified Womens Health Specialist (some physios, massage therapists and pilates instructors undertake further training to specialize in this area…errmm like me!)
I will also be providing a step-by-step self check you can do at home in a future blog, so keep your eyes peeled.
Pro-tip #2
Get your abdominal scars checked out by a scarwork therapist.
Scars can cause a lot of adhesions that proliferates beyond the trauma, or injury.

It needs attention whether you had your abdominal scar 12 weeks ago, 2 years ago or even 12 years+ ago.
At the scar site, we have a certain amount of ‘stuckness’. The early healing where we lay down collagen fibres, does so in a haphazard way, and can stick to muscles and organs around it. If left untreated, or left without the correct nutrients & movement – we can end up with:
- a loss of movement in that area of our body – which then affects the rest of our body, because through our connective tissue everything is connected.
- And/or a ‘shelf’ like ridge above the scar
- Pain or dragging sensations across the tummy especially on reaching or standing tall.
Releasing scar tissue and working on the viscera of the tummy gives us our freedom back & often transforms how a tummy looks on the outside too.

Pro-tip #3
Make sure you are pooping everyday
Its really hard to activate the abdominals when your colon is full! And a sluggish bowel really doesn’t help the aesthetics of our tummies either.
Having a good daily bowel movement, that isn’t hard to pass, is extremely important for our pelvic health. If a bowel movement is hard to pass, this could contribute to a prolapse, because constipation puts pressure on the pelvic floor.
Just a couple of constipation cure remedies, taken from my new e-book “Reclaim your Core”:
- Sit in a squat position on the toilet. Feet elevated on a small stool or ‘squatty potty’ brings your pelvis into optimal alignment for evacuation without straining.
- Drink water: Roughly 2 litres per day. Herbal teas & weak cordial counts. For personalised amount, divide your body weight in kgs by 2.2 = the number of litres you need each day
- Eat fibre daily: green vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, chia seeds
Resolving the concerns above will lay the foundations for you to feel amazing in your body!
All you need to do?
Start with your highest priority above and take small steps consistently.
It’s time to take control
