What If Your Tight Shoulders Aren’t Just About Posture?

Tight shoulders are one of the most common things women mention to me.

“I constantly feel tense here.”
“My shoulders always feel up by my ears.”
“No matter how much I stretch, it comes back.”

And whilst posture, strength and mobility absolutely matter (I’m a Pilates Instructor!), I often think we oversimplify tension by treating it as purely physical.

Because sometimes tight shoulders are not just about muscles.

Sometimes they are about carrying too much for too long.

Modern life keeps many of us in a low-level state of stress almost constantly. The nervous system becomes used to being “on” ~ rushing, multitasking, caregiving, overthinking, coping. Over time, the body adapts to that state.

Breathing becomes shallower.
The jaw clenches.
The pelvic floor grips.
The shoulders lift and tighten.

The body is incredibly intelligent. It responds to the environment and the messages it receives every day.

This is one reason I love mindful movement practices like Pilates so much. Not just because of the improved strength and mobility, but because of the deep calm that occurs in the nervous system and the gentle reconnection to our body again.

  • Breath deepens.
  • Awareness improves.
  • Movement becomes less about punishment and more about listening.

And this is also why I’m increasingly interested in combining movement with reflective practices like journalling.

Because whilst Pilates can help us reconnect physically, journalling can help us notice with more clarity what we’re carrying mentally and emotionally too.

Sometimes women realise:

  • they haven’t slowed down properly in months
  • they are constantly bracing without noticing
  • they feel disconnected from themselves
  • they don’t actually know what they need anymore

That awareness can be incredibly powerful.

Not because journalling magically removes pain, but because awareness often changes how we respond to ourselves. And when we change the relationship with our body, nervous system and stress levels, the body often starts responding differently too.

A small thing you could try today:

Pause for two minutes and ask yourself:

  • Where do I hold stress first in my body?
  • What has felt heavy lately?
  • What does my body actually need today?

Not what your to-do list needs.
Not what everyone else needs.
What your body needs.

Sometimes that small pause is where healing begins.

If this resonates with you, Anna and I would love to welcome you to our Pilates & Journalling Evening Retreat on Thursday 2nd July at Westwood Retreat Centre.

Together, we’ll explore how mindful movement and reflective journalling can help women reconnect with both body and mind, release tension, regulate stress and create a little more space to breathe again.

Expect calming Pilates, guided journalling, gentle reflection, warm conversation and a deeply supportive atmosphere designed for women who are craving calm, clarity and connection.

You do not need to be “good” at Pilates or writing.
You simply need a willingness to slow down and listen to yourself a little more closely.
